Religion in America
It is pretty interesting stuff in the news the other day.  Mohammad is now the most popular name to name a baby in England.  That really made me think about a lot of things.  In America, we try to celebrate the different viewpoints that people have.  That is supposed to be the spirit of America anyway.  You might not see that everywhere you go but in time of crisis, Americans rise to the occasion.  Our Armed forces come together to fight wars.  Their backgrounds are very different at times.  We fight for freedom together and our religion makes no difference.  They say when you are in a foxhole everyone believes in God.  We are country that was based on Christianity but our fore fathers still gave us the freedom in any God we want.  We worry way too much, on what people think after we die.  I like reading about all that stuff, but in reality, no one really knows what happens after we die.  We have to have faith.  We have to believe the stories handed down from generations.  Our backgrounds too have a lot to do with it.  We tend to keep what religion we were raised at.  In recent times though, we seem to change that a lot more.  I saw on the HBO show Bill Maher that twenty three percent of people have changed and switched churches.  I do not know exactly what that tells us.  Do people have more doubt in their beliefs?  Do they question the dogma most churches give you as really untrue or can not at the least be proven?  Do we look at things differently now and want more truth in our churches and less judgments and condensations?  Have churches disappointed so much that we search for religion in different ways?  Do we not trust the church we go to?  Some things churches preach seem just can not be true.  You can not dance or drink coffee.  You can not eat pork or meat on certain days.  You must pray all the time.  You must hate or dislike other people who think differently.  I like the billboards that ask what would Jesus do?  What would Jesus do?  Would he argue to let poor people figure it out themselves?  Would he refuse aid to dying children all over the world?  Would he build giant churches and praise this religion for building a playground instead of giving money to the poor?  How many times have preachers in church just made up stuff about the bible or really does not know enough to tell some one else anything?  Less people go to church than ever before but people when polled say they believe in God.  How much is the Pope’s ring?  How many people can that feed around the world?  How many preachers wear suits that cost more than your entire wardrobe?  You talk to people and they are Ok with that.  Why?  I want my preacher to look good.  Religion should look good I guess.  Look how pretty our church looks.  Look at how nice our new parking lot looks.  Do not make it hard for me to go to church.  Drop me off right at the steps.  Usher me in and play great music.  Is my coffee ready?  Bye.
